水乡古镇南浔地处杭嘉湖平原腹地,北濒太湖,东与江苏吴江市交界。水陆交通便捷,318国道、长湖申航道横贯东西,距上海、苏州、杭州均在百公里上下,镇区面积34平方公里。1991年,南浔名列浙江省15个历史文化名镇之首。南浔镇巳被我国向联合国推荐为世界文化遗产。 初唐诗人王勃在《滕王阁序>》中曾用“物华天宝”、“人杰地灵”来赞颂洪都，如果借用此语概述南浔镇的历史、地理、经济、文化也相当贴切。她地处苏杭嘉湖的中心点上，南宋以来已是“水陆冲要之地”； “耕桑之富，甲于浙右”；原因浔溪河而名浔溪。后来由于浔溪之南商贾云集，屋宇林立，而名南林。至淳佑季年（1252）建镇，南林、浔溪两名各取首字，改称南浔。明万历至清中叶为南浔经济繁荣鼎盛时期，民间有“湖州一个城，不及南得半个镇”之说。
